| There is a space I visit often, and it is a place where time disappears as I create. As each idea appears, a million more unfold. Words cannot describe the journey, but the results are here for you to see. |

Valerie Randall is a veteran graphic designer, creative director, commercial illustrator and fine artist. Randall is a self-taught illustrator who has been drawing from the moment she first held a crayon. In high school, when some of her cartoons and illustrations caught the attention of some paying customers, she launched her first small business enterprise. Being paid to draw was a dream come true. She has been self-employed since age 23.
Her broad background includes illustrating for army training films, coloring books, brochures, textbooks, greeting cards, packaging and user interfaces. She became specialized in three-dimensional design, which led to a five-year teaching career at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.
Randall was the principle of two successful Bay Area design firms, and her client list includes Broderbund, Lingual House, Sandia National Laboratories, Charles Schwab, Levi Strauss, Addison Wesley, AT&T and Pacific Bell. |

I am self-taught. One day, a friend talked me into taking over a class at a private art college. The very first class of that semester was terrifying, but it wasn’t long before I was teaching seven college courses in three days. I found that I loved teaching and it came naturally to me. I could easily explain how to get from point A to B. There is nothing more thrilling than seeing that light bulb go on when a student really gets it. After five years, and being awarded Best Instructor by the student body, I resigned to concentrate on my own work.
However, I recently wrote a book which required many of my teaching skills and I have been known to appear at scrapbook stores to teach make-and-takes. I am currently developing a series of how-to materials for the craft and scrapbook industry, so teaching is still very much a part of what I love to do. |

“Valerie’s accomplishments within the Graphic Design profession as well as her expertise in the area of design instruction/education take on an added luster when one learns—as she told me at our first meeting—that she is self-taught. What that usually signals is someone who has, on their own, carved out a place somewhere in the “middle” of creative endeavors. Not so in the case of Ms. Randall!” |
Karen L. Jefferson
Sandia National Laboratories
“We have used an excellent graphic artist (Valerie Randall) to assist us in designing and illustrating our user interface for the ETS Control System. She is creative, works quickly, and designs for the application (i.e. listens to what the customer wants). As you can tell I highly recommend her and would definitely use her in my future projects.” |
