commercial illustration and fine art
Please contact me for a quote to create illustrations for your commercial projects or for fine art to hang in your home or office. I am used to working under deadline and with or without art direction. I can create individual pieces or develop a series.
mediums
acrylic
Beginning with a masonite board, many coats of gesso medium are applied and sanded until the surface of the board resembles an egg shell. The drawing is transferred using carbon paper. Then, sheer washes are applied until the depth of colour desired, is achieved. It is rather like glazing, but more akin to staining as colour is applied, lifted, and reapplied. Work is finished with a sealer. Sometimes silver or gold leaf is used as are paints with metallic flakes. I always use Golden brand acrylic products. To make this digital, it needs to be scanned. If the piece is very large, it needs to be photographed first. The majority of my work, though, is small.
black line
Simple black and white drawings, done by hand using Rapidiograph pens and India ink. Rapidiograph pens come in a variety of nib widths, my favorite are the very skinny ones (00 or 000.) This work is done on either vellum or Duralene which is a plastic that has a frosted surface treated for ink. To make this digital, it needs to be scanned, and any white background dropped out.
coloured pencil
After the final drawing is created on tracing paper, it is traced in ink (either black or brown) onto either vellum or Duralene. Then the coloured pencil is applied, working it with a dissolving liquid and a cotton swab or rag. Both sides of the paper are worked to add dimension. Details are added on the front surface. Depending on the look desired, final outlining is done in either ink or dark pencil. To make this digital, it needs to be scanned, and any white background dropped out.
digital
Adobe Illustrator is my medium of choice for electronic art. I usually use the mouse to draw with, or sometimes a Wacom tablet.
